Narrower than most of the major rivers in southwest Montana, the Ruby offers unique and rewarding fishing. Access A majority of this river flows through private property. Below the dam there are clearly marked access sites serviced by Montana FWP. Once legally accessed, Montana Stream Access Law allows an angler to fish a stream or river in an unlimited capacity, as long as they stay within the high water marks of the riverbed. The upper stretch of the river above Ruby Reservoir is also surrounded by private property, with the uppermost reaches within National Forest boundaries. The Beaverhead River is one of the premier brown trout fishing rivers in Montana. The Beaverhead produces more large trout, particularly brown trout, than any other river in Montana. The Beaverhead River begins at Clark Canyon Dam, near Dillon, and flows for 80 miles to the confluence with the Jefferson River.
