Big Hole River Montana Mobile GPS Fishing Map

The Big Hole River Fishing Map is designed to give anglers a clear, detailed understanding of one of Montana’s most storied and diverse trout rivers. Rising high in the Beaverhead Mountains and flowing through expansive valleys, cottonwood bottoms, and canyon stretches before joining the Beaverhead River near Twin Bridges, the Big Hole offers classic Western fly fishing across a wide range of water types. The river supports healthy populations of wild brown trout, rainbow trout, brook trout, and Arctic grayling—one of the few remaining strongholds for grayling in the Lower 48—providing outstanding fishing opportunities from spring through fall.

This map highlights the Big Hole River’s most productive and well-known sections, including upper river meadow stretches, canyon water, and the broad, float-friendly reaches of the lower river. Public land boundaries are clearly marked for legal and confident access, along with carefully researched access points and exclusive parking locations found on no other maps—helping anglers plan efficient days on the water and reach less-pressured stretches.

The Big Hole River is both a walk-and-wade and float fishery. Wading anglers will find excellent access along many public corridors, particularly in upper and mid-river sections with classic riffle-run structure. Floating is common and highly effective on broader downstream stretches, allowing anglers to cover long runs, fish multiple banks, and reach remote water. Boat launches and take-outs are identified to assist with float planning, while key river features help anglers understand changing flows, structure, and holding water throughout the season.

Detailed insect hatch charts reflect the Big Hole’s strong freestone insect life, including salmonflies, golden stoneflies, PMDs, caddis, BWOs, and terrestrials later in the summer. These hatches drive legendary dry-fly fishing, supported by productive nymphing and streamer opportunities during runoff transitions and higher flows. Whether you’re stalking grayling in shallow riffles, wading classic trout water, or drifting long valley stretches by boat, this map provides the practical, field-ready information needed to fish the Big Hole River with confidence.
