The Bighorn River Fishing Map is designed to give anglers a clear, detailed understanding of one of Montana’s most productive and renowned tailwater trout rivers. Flowing from Yellowtail Dam below Bighorn Lake through wide plains and cottonwood bottoms before joining the Yellowstone River, the Bighorn is famous for its cold, stable flows, exceptional insect production, and dense populations of large trout. The river supports world-class numbers of wild brown trout and rainbow trout, offering outstanding fishing opportunities throughout much of the year.

This map highlights the Bighorn River’s most well-known and productive sections, including the legendary water below Yellowtail Dam, classic runs through the Afterbay area, and downstream stretches toward Hardin. Public land boundaries are clearly marked for legal and confident access, along with carefully researched access points and exclusive parking locations found on no other maps—helping anglers plan efficient days on the water while navigating a river corridor with a mix of public access and private land.

The Bighorn River is both a walk-and-wade and float fishery. Wade anglers will find excellent access below the dam and along select public corridors, while floating is the most common and effective way to fish the river, allowing anglers to cover long, productive stretches and reach prime water efficiently. Boat launches and take-outs are identified to assist with float planning, and key river features help anglers and boaters understand flow management, structure, and how trout position themselves in this highly productive tailwater.

Detailed insect hatch charts reflect the Bighorn’s prolific tailwater insect life, including midges, BWOs, PMDs, tricos, and caddis. These hatches fuel some of the most consistent dry-fly and nymph fishing in the West, with streamer fishing effective during higher flows and colder months. Whether you’re wading technical runs below the dam or drifting long tailwater stretches by boat, this map provides the practical, field-ready information needed to fish the Bighorn River with confidence.
