The Clark Fork River in western Montana is the state’s longest river, flowing over 300 miles from its headwaters near Butte through Missoula and into Idaho, where it joins Lake Pend Oreille. Despite its size, the Clark Fork offers excellent trout fishing, especially for wild rainbow and brown trout, with abundant insect hatches and long, fishy riffles, runs, and deep pools. The section from Missoula downstream to St. Regis is particularly popular with float anglers, offering strong caddis, PMD, and BWO hatches, plus great hopper fishing in late summer. With its broad valley views, braided channels, and healthy wild fish population, the Clark Fork is a favorite among Montana locals seeking solitude and steady action.
