The Dolores River in southwest Colorado is a breathtaking and complex fishery, flowing from the San Juan Mountains near Lizard Head Pass through alpine forests, red rock canyons, and desert landscapes before eventually joining the Colorado River. The tailwater section below McPhee Reservoir is renowned for its selective, trophy-sized brown trout, thriving in cold, clear water with rich insect life. Above the reservoir, the river winds through remote high-country meadows and forests, offering excellent dry fly fishing for wild browns, rainbows, and native cutthroat. Though flows below the dam are limited by irrigation demands, when conditions align, the Dolores becomes one of Colorado’s most rewarding and scenic rivers to fish.
